Margaret River

Welcome to the fascinating land of the Wardandi, an area rich in history.

Margaret River’s traditional custodians are the Nyungar people of Wardan – the Ocean Spirit. Dreamtime stories passed through the generations tell of a time when Margaret River’s coast extended about 70km further than it does today. A huge earthquake then wiped out eighty percent of the Wardandi and dramatically altered the coastline.

The first Europeans to encounter Australia’s west coast were the Dutch in 1621, followed by the French in the early 1800s. Migrants settled in the area as early as 1830 and the township of Margaret River took off in the 1920s with Group Settlement. These pioneers established industries such as whaling and timber then more recently, dairy and beef farming.

Today the heartbeat of the region is fine wine, gourmet cuisine and eco-tourism. On Margaret River’s streets lined with specialty stores, cafes, pubs and friendly locals, you’ll find a town that is quaint but chic – an effortless blend of country charm and cosmopolitan sophistication.

Margaret River wine

The Margaret River appellation has a reputation as one of the finest viticulture regions of the world. A Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters provides ideal grape cultivation conditions. An exceptional blend of climate, soil and best practices lead to consistently high quality fruits with intense flavour. Margaret River’s flagship wines are Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

The first commercial vines were planted in the Wilyabrup area in 1967 at Dr Tom Cullity’s Vasse Felix vineyard. From these small beginnings, the industry grew, driven by passionate family owned producers searching for ‘terroir’; ‘a unique sense of place’ in their wines.

Today there are over 250 wineries in the region. Every vintage our dynamic winemakers delight the wine world with their skill and innovation, and Margaret River wines are enjoyed by connoisseurs around the globe.
