Margaret River wineries
One of Australia’s premier wine regions, Margaret River is internationally celebrated for fine wines of character and depth. Tastings are available at a range of wineries and every cellar door offers something special, from the long-established vineyards of Cape Mentelle, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix, to the large estates of Leeuwin and Voyager, and boutique family operated wineries such as Woody Nook, Brookwood and Brown Hill. The region’s bounties are showcased at the popular annual Margaret River Wine Region Festival. The excellent winery tour companies Bushtucker Winery Tours, Harvest Tours, Neil McCloud Tours and Margaret River Tours offer Vintages guests a generous 10% discount and a door-to-door service. Alternatively, we recommend our local Designated Drivers service.
Margaret River’s passionate chefs and sommeliers are recognised for creative food and wine combinations. Award-winning fine dining is to be found at many wineries, including Watershed, Knee Deep and Xanadu. Cullen Wines offer a fresh seasonal menu from their biodynamic organic kitchen garden and The Berry Farm offers mouth-watering preserves, syrups and dressings. For a delicious dinner, simply stroll from Vintages accommodation along the main street for Margaret River’s restaurants and cafes including Goodfellas, Arc of Irs, Morries and Waves.
Margaret River is heaven for food-lovers, with olive oil, beautiful soaps and lotions, venison and cheese makers open to the public and a tantalising array of locally and organically grown produce available at farmers markets and deli cafes. Sweet-tooth satisfaction is found at local chocolate, fudge, nougat and ice-cream factories.
The region is also rapidly becoming a beer-lovers paradise, and those who enjoy a traditionally-brewed cold one will be happy touring local micro-breweries. These include Bootleg Brewery, Colonial Brewing Co., Cowaramup Brewing Co., Duckstein Brewery, Cheeky Monkey Brewery and Cidery, Bush Shack Brewery and Eagle Bay Brewing Company.
The caves of the limestone ridge between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin are remarkable windows to our ancient underworld formed over a million years ago. Spot magnificent formations and crystals in the popular Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave and Lake Cave.
Water sports and activities
Margaret River is world-famous for surfing and body boarding and we’re spoilt for choice with over 75 local surf breaks. Windsurfing, kite surfing, fishing, scuba diving, kayaking and paddle-boarding are also popular. Even if you don’t fancy getting wet, watching surfers putting on a show at Prevelly Point’s ‘Main Break’ is a must, with professional surf competitions every March and November.
For adrenaline seekers there’s also mountain biking, four wheel driving, rock climbing, abseiling, speedway and paint balling. Or for a more relaxed pace, try a round of golf, horse riding, walking, tennis, or bowls.
There’s no better place to take it easy than in Margaret River. You can’t help but unwind, surrounded by clear skies, perfect beaches and serene forests. Float lazily in tranquil turquoise waters, indulge in a massage or spa treatment, or simply curl up with a good book. Can you imagine strolling through Boranup’s majestic Karri forests listening to birdsong, before enjoying a decadent picnic and watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean? Or you could treat yourself to a little retail therapy with some pampering products from The Natural Olive Oil Soap Factory or Cape Lavender.
A children’s wonderland, the Margaret River region makes a fabulous family holiday. Marvel at the marine world at Busselton Jetty’s Underwater Observatory or discover underground mysteries at the CaveWorks Eco Centre. Favourite family beaches with calm waters include Gnarabup and Meelup and the star attraction of Hamelin Bay is the curious stingrays as they cruise the shallows. In town, taste the yummy treats at lolly factories, or check out the local skate park and children’s playgrounds. Local animal farms, mazes, mini golf and surf schools are a short drive away, and the boomerang throwing or stone tool making workshops at the Wardan Aboriginal Centre are great fun for all ages.
Whales grace our waters on their annual migrations. Southern Right Whales give birth in the protected shallows and Humpback Whales are often seen jumping out of the water in astonishing playful breaching displays. Spot them from the shores, from the Capes Lighthouses or get a closer look on a boat tour from Augusta or Geographe Bay.
Perhaps as a result of Margaret River’s inspiring scenic splendour, the region is teeming with the studios and galleries of acclaimed painters, potters, photographers, jewellers, sculptors, glass blowers, furniture makers and textile artists.
Meander the art trail, meet the artists, watch them work and look for that unique piece to take home. Within walking distance from Vintages accommodation you’ll find Melting Pot Glass Studio, Margaret River Gallery, Tunbridge Gallery, Christian Fletcher and Jahroc. Further afield, the Wardan Aboriginal Centre displays local indigenous artwork.
From August to November the region bursts into technicolour bloom. As one of only 25 international biodiversity hotspots, the region boasts an astonishing array of native flowers such as orchid, kangaroo paw, banksia, acacia, boronia and bottlebrush, easily enjoyed from Flora Road scenic tourist drives or when out bushwalking.
